“I want to create pieces that people use everyday, lovely things that you can have out and are not afraid to use and enjoy. That’s what I’m really aiming for – beautiful functional pots that people love to use.” Elke Lucas
Elke’s background as a potter began when she married into a family of potters and worked as a studio potter on the North Devon Coast in the UK making slip decorated earthenware inspired by the earthenware tradition in that area. She always felt drawn to porcelain however, loving the translucent delicate quality of the clay. Elke was particularly influenced by the great studio potter Lucie Rie and has enjoyed the opportunity to experiment with different clays and techniques.
Elke has set up her ceramics studio in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast where she makes wheel thrown, high-fired porcelain. The decoration on the pots is minimal, using natural oxides, which allows the elegant shapes and the quality of the porcelain body to shine through resulting in pots that have a natural sophistication and a beautiful quiet presence.
Elke's pots are fired to a high temperature (1280c) to give them durability and strength. Her work is food safe and if handled with care to avoid scratching and thermal shock dishwasher safe too.
